This project is a follow-up project of project “Energienetz Berlin Adlershof”, in which an adaptive cooling system was planned, implemented and put into operation at “Zentrum für Photonik und Optik” of Berlin. The current project focuses on the further development, optimization and validation of this cooling system.

One of the innovative technologies within the developed system is an air-conditioning system based on liquid desiccant dehumidification process. In this system, the latent heat is reduced by absorption through liquid desiccant instead of being cooled down to dew point and reheating, which will consume much more unnecessary energy. Besides the significant energy saving at air-conditioning, the saturated liquid desiccant could be regenerated at low temperature 40°C (depending on the type of liquid desiccant and required air humidity), which enables the system to couple with renewable energy with a low temperature level, e.g. solar energy, industrial waste heat. Moreover, the system could not only be operated for air dehumidification in summer, the heat generated in the process of dehumidification could also be used for space heating in winter.

The work package of Hermann-Rietschel-Institut (HRI), Department of Building Energy Systems of TU Berlin, is to develop a tool to simulate the dehumidification process. In the former project, the feasibility of the methodology was verified by building the model with Modelica based on the experimental data from one published research paper [2][3]. In the scope of the current project, the developed model will be optimized, calibrated and validated against the monitoring data of the actual air-conditioning system in Adlershof. The main focus is the development of the thermodynamic property model for magnesium chloride, which is the current liquid desiccant in the system.
