Inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by UVC light and hazardous to health

The main goal of this joint project is to investigate the inactivation of SARSCoV-
2 and other selected respiratory viruses by UVC radiation of different
wavelengths, irradiation doses, irradiation powers, bioburden, and humidity
on inanimate and animate surfaces, i.e., healthy skin and oral mucosa. The
focus is on the wavelength range of appr. 230 nm to 270 nm, for which the
designations "near-UVC" (260-280 nm) and "far-UVC" (<240 nm) will also be
used in the following. Both the findings on virucidal efficacy and compatibility
for humans and the development of UVC light sources are necessary
prerequisites for numerous applications of the use of UVC radiation for the
disinfection of sensitive surfaces, possibly for antisepsis and in particular for
the decontamination of aerosols in recirculated room air (recirculated air)
from air-conditioning systems, e.i. in public transport and air-conditioned
rooms, as well as for room air decontamination in non-ventilated rooms by
sucking the room air and recirculating it after UVC exposure.
