Air transport in buildings accounts for about 10 % of electricity consumption in Germany. This demand can be reduced by reducing pressure losses in ventilation systems and in the duct network. In this research project, two sub-projects examined components of the central air handling unit and fittings of the duct network with regard to pressure loss and possible fluid-mechanical optimizations. The methodology included system simulations, 3D flow simulations and experiments.

Among other things, a method for life cycle cost calculation was developed in the air handling unit subproject in order to evaluate ventilation systems energetically and economically. Also, validated simulation models for finned-tube heat exchangers and steam humidifiers were developed. To reduce pressure losses, pressure regain units for radial fans were developed and heat exchangers with a bypass were examined, as well as the suitability of an air washer as a multifunctional air conditioning component.

In the subproject concerning the duct network, experimental investigations were carried out on the actual pressure loss of pipe bends and their combination, thus calling into question the actual design rules. No suitable turbulence model for the numerical calculation of the pressure loss in duct fittings could be found. The geometry of a pipe bend was changed numerically by means of an optimizer, so that significantly lower pressure losses could be measured.
