Automatic optimization of energy efficiency by autonomously adjusting control parameters

In every building energy system a wide variety of sub-components such as heat generators, buffer tanks or radiators are combined to integrated systems. Each sub-component is influenced by dedicated control components. In order to ensure an energy-efficient operation of the entire system, it is necessary to coordinate all control components. However, due to  the increase in complexity, this can no longer be accomplished manually.

The interaction between suboptimal coordinated sub-components results in a deficit of operating efficiency in building energy systems of about 10 to 20 %. Taking the final energy consumption in the building sector in Germany of around 35 % into account, an increase in operating efficiency leads to a considerable optimization potential.

This potential can only be exploited, if holistic solutions are applied, that adjust each individual sub-component to each other during operation automatically. This research project develops a new procedure, that aims at building energy systems specifically. The parameterization of a building simulation model will be carried out based on current measured data of a building during operation. The identified model is then used to calculate improved control parameters, which are then transferred back into the real control components.

Compared to current procedures – using setting rules or individually developed simulation models – the Auto-EnEff procedure has some outstanding features. The individual user behaviour is taken into account by fitting models during the daily building operation. At the same time control parameters are adjusted and reflect the current usage of the building. Furthermore, the control parameters are always calculated in connection with the entire system.
